Green waste kerbside collection

Council’s green waste kerbside collection is under way. This is a significant undertaking, and Council asks the community to please be patient as the unprecedented amount of green waste that was generated by Tropical Cyclone Alfred is collected.

Remember:

  • Green waste only – no other materials.
  • Disaster-related green waste only – from inside and immediately outside your home – is being collected.
  • Other green waste should be taken to a Recycling and Waste Centre as usual.
  • On the mainland, a green waste bin is the best way to dispose of small amounts of green waste.

Kerbside checklist:

  • Ensure your green waste has been placed clear of electrical boxes, water meters, roads and pathways.
  • Size matters – is your waste cut into manageable pieces that two people can safely lift?

For residents who can manage their own clean-up, Council urges you to take your green waste to a local Recycling and Waste Centre.

Residents do not need to register for this service. Please do not place additional green waste on the kerb once your street has been collected.

Need help with green waste clean-up after Tropical Cyclone Alfred?

We understand that cleaning up after the cyclone has been a big job, and for some in our community, it has been too much to handle alone. Council has been working with Disaster Relief Australia to help residents with mobility or health issues clear green waste and vegetation. This work is now being finalised for those who have already registered for support. Registration for this service is now closed.

Disposal of sandbags

After extreme weather events such as Tropical Cyclone Alfred, proper management of sandbags is essential for your safety and the environment. Sandbags should never be disposed of in regular kerbside bins, as they are too heavy for collection trucks.

To help manage the ongoing recovery efforts, Council urges residents to avoid taking uncontaminated sandbags to Recycling and Waste Centres. Instead, store them for the future or use the sand in your garden.

Sandbags contaminated by floodwater or made of hessian should be disposed of at Recycling and Waste Centres. For more detailed advice on handling and disposing of sandbags, see our Redlands Coast Today news post: How to manage your sandbags.

Floodwaters and stormwater drains

Despite floodwaters receding across Redlands Coast, residents are urged to keep away from flooded creeks, waterways and storm drains.

Floodwater contains runoff from roads, paddocks, drains, and potentially, sewage overflows. It can contain toxic chemicals such as petrol or oil, pet and human waste and other contamination (pesticides, industrial chemicals and more). For more information see our Redlands Coast Today news post: Stay out of floodwaters whether signed or not.

Public Health

Fire ants during post-cyclone clean-up

As residents clean up after Tropical Cyclone Alfred, it’s important to stay alert for fire ants.

Fire ants may have been disturbed by the heavy rain and flooding and have been known to raft on water.

They pose serious risks to the health of people, animals and pets with their aggressive behaviour and painful stings.

For information on how to identify fire ants and how to report sightings, see our Redlands Coast Today news post: Stay alert for fire ants during post-cyclone clean-up.

Stay safe from mosquitoes following heavy rain

Redlands residents are urged to check their yards for possible mosquito breeding sites following Tropical Cyclone Alfred. The heavy rain and localised flooding, along with warm temperatures, has provided ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.

Council’s Mosquito Management Team has been checking known mosquito breeding sites and is conducting both ground and aerial treatments in response. For information on how to protect yourself and your property from mosquitoes, see our Redlands Coast Today news post: Protect against mozzies following heavy rain.
