Victoria Point pontoon upgrade

Project background

The Victoria Point pontoon and boat ramp are key access points for local boaters and Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR).

Engineering assessments identified significant damage to the pontoon’s joints and edges due to wave and wind exposure. As a result, three unsafe sections were removed, and the remaining eight sections are nearing the end of their lifespan.

To ensure long-term safety and reliability, Council plans to replace all 11 sections with a stronger, more resilient structure.

What's happening now?

Council is moving forward with plans to replace the pontoon system with a more durable design. The new structure will better withstand the environment while continuing to support boaters and VMR operations.

In preparation for these works, Council is:

• finalising project planning and engineering requirements.
• engaging with key stakeholders, including VMR, to ensure the updated design meets operational needs.
• seeking funding through the FY25/26 Capital Works Program.

• Temporary access changes – Limited access to the Victoria Point Boat Ramp during construction. Updates will be provided once the works are scheduled.
• Alternative options – Another boat ramp is available within 500 meters to reduce inconvenience.
• Signage & safety measures – Advisory signage will guide users to access changes and alternative options.

In the meantime, interim maintenance and repairs may be carried out to ensure safety before full replacement works commence.

Why have works taken so long?

We understand the community’s frustration with the ongoing works, closures, and lack of resolution. Temporary repairs were planned to address damaged pontoon sections.

However, further engineering assessments showed that repairs wouldn’t provide a long-term fix, and a full replacement was needed instead.

This change meant revising the project scope, securing funding, and undertaking detailed planning, which took time. We know it has been a long wait, and we appreciate your patience.

When will construction start?

Upgrade works are planned for FY25/26, pending funding approval. Once funding is secured and a contract is awarded, we will confirm the construction timeline and provide updates on any impacts to access..

Will the boat ramp be closed during construction?

We aim to minimise disruptions, but temporary access changes may be necessary. Any closures or restricted access will be communicated in advance through signage, the project webpage, and community updates.
