Types of approvals needed
If you wish to open a bed and breakfast in the Redlands, you may need several approvals, including:
- planning approval - this relates to the impact of the development on the site, surrounding areas and the environment
- building approval - this relates to the safety and construction of the structure
- a food business licence and structural kitchen approval - this ensures safe food preparation.
Planning approval
A bed and breakfast is defined as a home based business in the Redland City Plan. For information on whether planning approval is required for your proposal, please refer to the home business web page.
Building approval
You need building approval if you carry out building works on the property, such as adding extra rooms. Building approval can be obtained from a private building certifier.
Food business licence and structural kitchen approval
Food businesses, including bed and breakfast establishments, must meet the requirements of the Food Act 2006 and the Food Safety Standards.
If you serve pre-packaged food (i.e. with no food handling), you may not need a food business licence.
However, if you serve unpackaged food, you will need a food business licence and structural kitchen approval, and must submit a food business application to Council.
You may need a separate kitchen to prepare the food, depending on the types of meals, number of meals per day, and layout and condition of the existing kitchen.
